![]() If you look in the middle, you'll find that the three wires change to two for a space between two bulbs, and then there's three again to the addon. Most 70 and 100 mini strings are wired like these 35 and 50 strings, only another set is added instead of the addon plug. The bulbs act as they would in the one-wire, but removing a bulb leaves the addon live. Ask the Expert: Brian Gleason of Light Keeper Pro explains how to solve that age-old problem where half the lights don't work from one Christmas season to th. If one of the bulbs burns out, the others will remain lit because there's a resistor in the base of the bulb that continues to conduct (the lamp filament is almost a dead short, compared to the resistor.) A third way (and common for mini-lights of 35 and 50 these days) is a "three wire" scheme it's perhaps best described as an extension cord, between the male and the addon, with a series string in parallel with that circuit. If one of the bulbs is removed, all will go out. Sometimes the wire is looped back so that it appears to be a two wire. Another way is "one wire" the bulbs (typically 2.2, 2.5, or 3.5 Volt, for 50, 50, or 35 bulbs on a string) are connected in series and there is no addon outlet. With the lights plugged in, use the voltage detector to check the live voltage. I measure the current in the light string half that was not faulty and it was 9mA. As I mentioned earlier the removal of a light will increase the current and LED's do not like high current. Typically, these are c-9 and c-7 sets they have to be 120V bulbs. The non working LED will obviously be in the string half that is not working. With the faulty LED light removed the light string half that did not work is now working minus 1 light. The bulbs are independantly wired to the two wires removing one leaves the others burning. This page is about pre-lit Christmas tree lights not working. ![]() Often, a Christmas light tester is the easiest way to locate the problem area. This can be a frustrating situation, especially if the tree is only 2-3 years old. You plug the tree in but not all the lights are shining. One way to wire a set of lights is "two wire", with an "addon" outlet at the end. Pre-lit Christmas Tree Lights Not Working. ![]()
